Dr Helen Bibby & Joan Nicolls (ASC) Team

This course will support practitioners to develop an understanding of how young children with Social Communication Difficulties understand play and to develop appropriate play activities.
Course content
The EYFS emphasises the importance of play for learning, however children with social communication difficulties or autism can find play difficult to understand. A tremendous amount of learning can be gained through play for all children. This course will consider how practitioners can break play into small steps so that children with social communication difficulties, autism (ASD) can participate in simple play activities.

This course is in two parts to allow practitioners to reflect upon their practice.
Part One will:
  • Explore the development of play skills for children with ‘typical development’ patterns
  • Explain the triad of impairment and how this can impact upon how young children with social communication difficulties or ASD play
  • Consider how we can break play into small units and practice and rehearse scenarios
There will be a reflective practice activity for the practitioners to complete in their setting in response to Part 1 and to prepare for Part 2.
Part Two will:
  • Explore a range of strategies to use with young children with social communication difficulties
Consider how to plan for a particular child or scenario
