Target Audience: SENCo’s, EYFS leaders and practitioners

This course aims to develop the practitioners’ awareness of the needs of Two year olds and to enable the setting to begin to provide appropriate and enhanced support for vulnerable Two year olds.

Being Two is a challenge, for the child, parents and practitioners. A huge amount of change occurs in the brain at around 24 months of age. As the brain is growing so quickly it ‘prunes’ itself, or removes those connections, which have not yet been fully established. For a child who has had the right time, this is perfect as it makes space for more neural networks to be made as the child encounters new and exciting adventures.

However, for the child who has experienced in the first Two years of their life, inconsistent care with limited opportunity for appropriate stimulation, such ‘pruning’ may not be looked upon in the same positive way. The good news is that through appropriate support and early intervention the child’s brain may be able to create new connection!

Course content includes:
Part one
Will consider: Brain development, in particular, across the prime areas for learning; the importance of attachment and the ways in which the child’s development may be affected by previous challenging early learning experiences.

There will be a reflective practice activity for participants to complete in their setting in response to Part 1 and to prepare for Part 2.
Part Two
Will consider: the changes needed to support this vulnerable group of children; the appropriate enabling environment for vulnerable 2 years olds and practical ideas to for participants to develop back in the setting.
